• Miss America 2011 marks the 90th anniversary of the contest which was first held in 1921. However out of those 90 years history, Miss America contest was only held for 84 years. It was not held in 1928-1932, 1934, and 1950.
• Miss California Arianna Afsar is a Top 36 American Idol Season 8 in 2009.
• Miss Delaware Kayla Martell becomes a national headline for being the first bald Miss America contestant. Kayla suffers a condition called alopecia areata, a rare condition that causes hair loss, until bald. This condition is not yet known cause.
• Another controversy comes from Miss New York Claire Buffie who adopts a gay rights platform called “Straight for Equality: Let’s Talk” as part of her campaign to become the next Miss America. This is the first time ever a Miss America contestant campaigning for gay community.
• Unlike Miss USA pageant, Miss America contestants composed not only by the delegates from all 50 states and District of Columbia, but also from Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
