The final review of Miss World 2009 is finally here. Let's take a look on parts that we adore and parts that we don't like so much.
Love It
(Things We Like)
• The opening number. Featuring breathtaking performance of Umoja, a parade of 112 beautiful women and 112 flags from around the world, theand above all the glittering fireworks, the opening number of Miss World 2009 is truly captivating the audiences attention. The concept itself may not be new, as it's already used in last year edition, but we don't mind watching it again this year simply because it is simply spectacular.
• The Dance of The World. Probably our most fave segment of the night. After a long hiatus, national costume is finally back at Miss World. And adding more twist, not only the delegates parading in their costume, some of them were also given a chance to showcase the beauty of the national dance from their particular country. The whole number is just great and we really hope Miss World would keep this segment for the following years.
• The inclusion of Korea and Colombia in Top 16. These two girls are the real life example of dark horses turn front runners. They were initially not so favored like some of the early front runners. But when the crucial time came, they know how to bring their A-game, especially in the final night when they become the center attention of the world. Korea ended up ahead of the hyped Vietnam for the Queen of Asia Oceania title while Colombia outlasted some of other fave contestants to be in Final 7. Both remind us that in pageant, favoritism is not everything.
• Angela Chow. She has hosted Miss World for 7 consecutive years and usually things that last too long bound to be boring. But in the case of Angela, there is no such thing. One of her trump card is her ability to bring life and excitement to Miss World stage with her spontaneous personality. This is probably one of the reason Miss World Organization keeps her in the host positon for such a long time.
• The talent showcase. We have heard about the awesomeness of their talent but now we can watch it ourselves. For the first time ever in Miss World history, the winners of Talent Fast Track (Sierra leone, Korea, Norway, and Canada) are given a chance to perform live at the final night. Turns out these girls gave some of the most entertaining performance in the Miss World stage and we prefer them to some of the boring guest performers over the past years. Our fave of the night is no other than Sierra Leone and her unique mask dance number.
Leave It
(Things We Dislike)
• The elimination format. After initially hinted that there would be a Top 20 this year, Miss World Organization decided to keep the number of semifinalists into Top 16 (supposedly Top 15 but due to the tie of Canada and Sierra Leone for Talent Fast Track there is one extra spot). With the largest number of contestants ever (112 of them) and such a competitive batch, 16 spots are simply not enough. Miss World should reconsider their elimination format and go for Top 20 instead as it will give more chance for the contestants to be included in the spotlight and reduce the possibility of wasted beauty.
• The inclusion of Japan, India, Poland, and Kazakhstan in Top 16. We can tolerate Japan and India because they entered the semifinal through Fast Track route (otherwise there is no chance for them at all). But we really don't understand the inclusion of Poland and Kazakhstan who are supposedly chosen by a panel of professional judges. Maybe the judges saw something in these girls that we don't but from the perspective of beauty, these girls are the weakest links of the Top 16 and should be replaced by other more deserving contestants.
• The exclusion of Scotland, Barbados, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica from Top 16. With only 16 spots available, and some of them are surprisingly taken by some of the undeserving contestants, there is no surprise that there will be a lot of wasted beauties this year. While it is not a big surprise, it is still a big disappointment that some of the most beautiful contestants in the competition are left out for reasons we will never know.
• The Q&A round. When Angela announced Miss World will bring back the old Q&A segment for Top 7 round, we had quite high expectation. This high expectation is quickly crushed as the questions asked are totally "no-brainer" like "What do you think of Johannesburg?" or "Why do you think you will be a good Miss World?". Miss World should start to take this Q&A more seriously like Miss Universe who has some of the most memorable questions and answers over these years.
Love It and Leave It
(Things We Both Like and Dislike)
• The victory of Gibraltar and the lost of Mexico. Okay it's truly bittersweet. At one side, we are really happy to see Gibraltar wins. She is a sweet and charming beauty who seems so genuine and sincere, a quality that a Miss World should have. However we can't hide our disappointment over Mexico's lost. Mexico is a living Goddess, a flawless and celestial beauty which may only come once in a blue moon, and she would have been a great Miss World. But maybe her beauty is just too perfect, too "otherworldly", so that the judges chose a more "down to earth" beauty instead. Regardless, we wish a good luck for both girls and hope for the best for their future.
Okay guys, it's a wrap! Our final say of Miss World 2009. See you next year at Miss World 2010 in Vietnam!

Miss World 2009 Part 8 : Last Year vs This Year - The Last 5 Nations
The last 5 nations of our comparison analyses are finally here!
11 Puerto Rico
Last year : Ivonne Orsini
This year : Jennifer Colon
Our opinion : Ivonne was one of the girl that we never expected to be in the semifinal last year. Sure she made quite a splash here and there but we thought there are still some other girls who were more deserving than her. Her predecessor this year, Jennifer, can simply follow Ivonne’s step and even go further into final round. Having one of the most beautiful face in the competition is surely a plus point for Jennifer. In addition to that, Jennifer has performed very well and even surpassed Ivonne’s performance in our opinion. It’s true that some people become doubtful after she is not enlisted in Top Model event and her photos during Beach Beauty event suggest that she is not as tall as she claim. But still Jennifer is a front runner this year and excluding her from semifinal line up will be a cardinal sin for the judges.
Our prediction : She is not as favored as she used to be but she will still be a semifinalist.
12 Spain
Last year : Patricia Rodriguez
This year : Carmen Laura Garcia
Our opinion : Another downfall of the year comes from this Iberian nation. After sending such a strong delegate like Patricia last year, Spain only sent a mediocre girl to this year pageant. Even in her national pageant, there are far prettier girl than Carmen such as Alejandra Echevarria and Melanie Santiago who both strike gold for Spain at Miss Earth and Miss International this year. Carmen has not made any sparks since her arrival at London and it looks like she won’t deliver too much on the final night.
Our prediction : A very long shot for semifinal round.
13 South Africa
Last year : Tansey Coetzee
This year : Tatum Keshwar
Our opinion : Aside of Mexico, South Africa is the only last year semifinalist nation who sends another high quality girl this year. Both Tansey and Tatum are statuesque, exotic, and gorgeous. They are both Miss Universe semifinalist and also front runner of Miss World in their respective year. Determining which one of them is stronger may end in an endless debate as both of their quality are almost in the same level. However, Tatum has a little edge over her predecessor for two reasons. First she made one round higher placement than Tansey in Miss Universe. And second she competes at Miss World in the perfect timing. Miss World Organization will certainly get a lot of attention if next year, during World Cup 2010 fever in South Africa, the reigning Miss World comes from the very same nation. Don’t be surprised to see Tatum crowned in the final night.
Our prediction : She is pretty and statuesque. Her nation is the host nation. And yes … her nation will host World Cup 2010 next year. A sure semifinalist!
14 India
Last year : Parvathy Omanakuttan
This year : Pooja Chopra
Our opinion : India is a powerhouse when it comes to beauty pageant. If you were a newbie in pageant world and you heard that trivia last year, you would believe it. Parvathy was a worthy contestant and deserved a First Runner Up position for being a living example of beauty with brain. But if you hear that very same trivia this year, you may beg to disagree. Pooja does not exemplify or represent any of India’s long term history as a pageant powerhouse. Her performance so far is quite disappointing and below the standard of Parvathy and the other successful Indian beauty queens. It’s no wonder that even with the hot sash of India, she is still omitted from the hot list of many pageant experts and fans around the world.
Our prediction : This year is not a good year for India in pageant world and it will continue with Pooja’s exclusion at Miss World final.
15 Russia
Last year : Ksenia Sukhinova
This year : Ksenia Shipilova
Our opinion : Two Ksenias. Two different fates. While Ksenia Sukhinova was a clear favorite for the crown last year, Ksenia Shipilova is nothing but a potential clapper for the final night. The gap between these two girls, tough they share the same name, are just too far like heaven and earth. Selecting this girl to represent their nation at Miss World is a major setback for Russia. Miss Russia Organization should have sent Svetlana instead of this girl.
Our prediction : Just because you have the same name, it does not mean you will be a semifinalist too.
Okay this is it ... the last of our analyses. But our coverage of the Miss World fever still continues with our Final leaderboard this Friday!

Miss World 2009 Part 7 : Last Year vs This Year - The Second 5 Nations
Our analyses and comparison between last year 15 semifinalists and their successors this year continue with the next 5 nations!
6 Brazil
Last year : Tamara Almeida Silva
This year : Luciana Bertolini
Our opinion : Since the first week of the competition, Tamara was already a choice by many fans for semifinalist and even finalist slot. Their delegate this year, Luciana, is indeed a pretty lady. But compared to Tamara, she is still one level down. She lacks the charm that Tamara showed in her year. Up until now, her performance is still under Tamara and we believe this will be reflected towards their chance to be in semifinal. While Tamara is almost a safe bet for semifinal spot, Luciana’s chance to be in the same position of her predecessor is quite a long shot.
Our prediction : It’s not a game over yet for Luciana and she still has her chance. But we won’t be surprised or disappointed if she is excluded from semifinal.
7 Angola
Last year : Brigith Dos Santos
This year : Jesinalda Silva
Our opinion : The three consecutive year record of being Continental Queen of Africa for Angola seems will be broken this year. Jesinalda is just not in the same league with her predecessor. While Brigith attracted the world’s attention with her statuesque supermodel figure last year, Jesinalda is simply drowned among the other contestants this year. Nothing is unique or special about this girl that makes her a standout. After three years glittering in sunshine, it seems time has come for Angola to face their dark cloudy days this year.
Our prediction : Angola can try to reclaim their luck back next year.
8 Kazakhstan
Last year : Alfina Nassyrova
This year : Dina Nuraliyeva
Our opinion : There are some similarities between these two delegates from Kazakhstan. Both of them competed in Miss Universe before trying their luck at Miss World. Both of them were also unplaced during their time at Miss Universe. However while Alfina managed to turn her luck and landed as a semifinalist at Miss World last year, we doubt Dina can do the same thing this year. Alfina has showed some signs that she is a delegate to watch when she was enlisted in both Beach Beauty and Top Model events, something that Dina is not able to do this year. That and the fact that this year contestants are slightly stronger than last year do not sound too good for Dina.
Our prediction : She can kiss Miss World semifinal good bye.
9 Iceland
Last year : Alexandra Ivarsdottir
This year : Gudrun Dogg Runarsdottir
Our opinion : Alexandra made her way to the semifinal round after she was chosen as the best sportswoman during Sports competition last year. However, even without winning a Fast Track event, we believe Alexandra’s chance to be a semifinalists is still wide open. On the contrary, we believe winning a Fast Track event is the only way for Gudrun to ensure her placemnet at this year Miss World contest. She is not as beautiful or radiant as Alexandra was, and in such a competitive year like this one, her chance is only getting slimmer and slimmer. At this point, it’s almost an impossible task for Gudrun to follow Alexandra’s success at Miss World final night.
Our prediction : She should have been trained to be a better sportswoman like Alexadra was because now without Fast Track ticket, the only thing that can make her a semifinalist is a miracle.
10 Trinidad & Tobago
Last year : Gabrielle Walcott
This year : Ashanna Arthur
Our opinion : The winner of Beauty With a Purpose, Gabrielle indeed showed the world that she is truly a woman of substance last year. Her charismatic and sophisticated aura helped her to land as the Second Runner Up, which is quite an achievement for this island nation. This year, after losing Peter Elias as their national director, Trinidad & Tobago also seems to lose their magic at Miss World contest. Ashanna is not only a complete degradation from Gabrielle’s level of beauty, she is also one of the weakest contestant this year. The only time she makes quite an attraction is when she is enlisted as one of Sports finalist. Aside of that, Ashanna is barely noticed by fans around the world and will likely be ignored by the judges too during the final night.
Our prediction : Definitely not a semifinalist.
Stay tune for our analyses on the last 5 nations ... including the winning nation of 2008 .. Russia!

Miss World 2009 Part 6 : Last Year vs This Year - The First 5 Nations
Last year, these 15 countries made the cut as Miss World semifinalists. But this year is certainly a new and different game. Let's follow our analyses and comparison between last year and this year contestant from these 15 nations and their chance to make another semifinal appearance this year!
1 Mexico
Last year : Anagabriela Espinoza
This year : Perla Beltran
Our opinion : Out of all last year semifinalist countries, Mexico is the only one who has confirmed their repeat inclusion on semifinal line up due to Perla’s victory at Top Model competition. Whether it is a coincidence or not, last year, Mexico also made the semifinal cut through Fast Track route. Last year, Anagabriela or Anagaby was clearly a front runner and even she did not make the final round, she returns this year, better than ever, to claim victory at Miss International 2009. Her successor Perla is even more stunning than Anagaby herself, so don’t be surprised if Perla is expected to make a higher placement for Mexico this year.
Our prediction : She’s already in, so why bother making a prediction.
2 Venezuela
Last year : Hanelly Quintero
This year : Maria Milagroz Feliz
Our opinion : Last year, Venezuela was named Continental Queen of Americas, despite the fact that some people believed Mexico should have won that title. Regardless, Hanelly was undeniably one of the strongest delegate last year and performed consistenly well throughout the month long competition. This year, Maria seems to fail to match the performance level of her predecessor. She does not make enough impression among fans and even worse, she is not included in both Beach Beauty and Top Model competitions. After performing strongly in the past three years, Venezuela is now at a crusial position where their chance to be called in is still doubtful and questionable.
Our prediction : Performance wise she should not be in. But wearing Venezuela sash is certainly an advantage and if she somehow makes it, that should be due to sash factor.
3 Ukraine
Last year : Iryna Zhuravska
This year : Evgeniya Tulchevska
Our opinion : During the pre pageant season last year, Iryna claimed the top position at almost all Leaderboard and Prediction Grid around the world with her celestial beauty. During the pageant season, however, her sparks slowly dimmed to the point where some of us became doubtful if she would still be included in semfinal. In the end, Iryna still made it, but at that moment she is no longer everybody’s favorite girl. This year, Evgeniya unfortunately follows the same path of Iryna. She is a pre pageant favorite who drastically loses her spot once the competition is started. There could be a million of reasons on why this thing happen. Maybe both of them are only charming in picture but not in person. Maybe both of them are not mentally strong enough to handle the competition. Whatever the reason is, history will record them as two bright stars who lose their shine.
Our prediction : Last year Iryna was lucky and barely made it. But luck rarely strikes twice and this year, it’s a no for Ukraine.
4 Croatia
Last year : Josipa Kusic
This year : Ivana Vasilij
Our opinion : In some lands, beautiful flower blooms every year. In other lands, it only blooms once in a while. Ths is certainly the case of Croatia. Josipa Kusic was a pleasant surprise last year. Barely unnoticed during the early weeks of the competition, she grew stronger and stronger, and eventually emerged as a semifinalist during the final night. This year, Ivana is also a negligible contestant. But unlike her predecessor, Ivana’s chance to pull a surprise is really slim. Both beauty and performance wise she is not up to the par of Josipa. The only consolation for Croatia this year seems to be their inclusion at Beach Beauty final.
Our prediction : Croatia’s beautiful flower has bloomed last year and it certainly does not bloom this year.
5 Barbados
Last year : Natalie Griffith
This year : Leah Marville
Our opinion : Last year, Natalie had to rely on her voice to sing her way into semifinal round. But this year is a different story for Barbados. Even without beautiful voice, Leah can still make her way to semifinal with her beauty alone. Leah is probably the most beautiful delegate Barbados ever sent to any international pageant. She has gorgeous face. She has great body. And she has performed much stronger than Natalie so far. It’s no wonder many people expect her to advance further than Natalie during the final night.
Our prediction : She is not a singer like her predecessor but she is better and will make it.
Stay tune for the next 5 nations!

Miss Earth 2009 Part 8 : Final Review - Love It or Leave It
The 2009 edition of Miss Earth has ended with the crowning of Larissa Ramos from Brazil. However, our coverage of this environment dedicated pageant still continues with one last part, the final night review. Join us and find out which parts of the final night that we love and which ones we think should just be left behind!
Love It
(Things We Like)
• The opening number. Featuring the contestants having fun in both swimsuits and national costumes at the beautiful sandy beach of Boracay, the opening number of Miss Earth 2009 embodies what a pageant should be. It blends color, music, and dance into a truly spectacular presentation. One of the best opening number in pageant history.
• Marc Nelson. He has hosted Miss Earth twice before (2002 and 2004) and he did a decent job both times. This time is also no exception. Marc Nelson is really a perfect choice for the male host position and we love to see this eye candy hunk back once again at Miss Earth stage.
• The return of evening gown round to Top 16. Since 2004, the evening gown round is reserved exclusively to Top 8 only. This leaves the swimsuit round as the only way for the judges to score the Top 16. But this year, with the Top 16 compete in both evening gown and swimsuit, the judges will get more chances to evaluate the semifinalists and hopefully a better judgement in determining who will advance to Top 8.
• The inclusion of Korea and France in Top 16. We have fallen in love with Park Ye Ju since the first sight and it doesn't change until the final night. We are totally glad that this unique, funky, and chic beauty is not ignored by the judges. Magalie Thierry, on the other hand, is a pleasant surprise for us. We do not expect her to place but her performance on the final convince us that she is a worthy choice for semifinal line up.
• The stage presence of Spain. Alejandra Echevarria's style for final night is really a reminiscence of Gona Dragusha during Miss Universe 2009. Alejandra sports the same hair style with Gona (which seems to be inspired from Audrey Hepburn's "Breakfast at Tiffany's") and like Gona did during Miss Universe final, Alejandra captures everybody's attention with her glam and elegant persona. Best stage presence of the night.
• The victory of Brazil. We never predicted Larissa would win before but now that this exotic beauty crowned Miss Earth 2009, we actually love the result. Larissa is a good choice to become Miss Earth 2009 and we wish her good luck throughout her reign.
Leave It
(Things We Dislike)
• Too many hosts. The more is not always the merrier. The number of hosts for a pageant event should just be limited to two, one male and one female. There is no need to have three hosts for this event.
• The inclusion of Northern Ireland, South Africa, and Singapore in Top 16. Nothing against these girls but they just don't match the beauty level of the other semifinalists.
• The exclusion of Cuba, Czech Republic, Italy, USA, Turks & Caicos, & Jamaica from Top 16. If life is really fair, these beautiful and sparkling girls should have made the cut. But for some reasons (we suspect attitude or communication skill factors), they were left out in the cold.
• The "not-so-final" final walk. A final walk, as its name states, should have done as a penultimate ceremony before the crowning of a new Queen. But Miss Earth 2009 begs to differ and let Karla Henry did her final walk during the Top 16 round. It's certainly a twist to the tradition, but not a good one in our opinion.
• The discontinuity of Top 4 round. The crowning of Miss Earth and her courts should have been done with only 4 remaining girls. This year, without a Top 4 round, the crowning is done with 8 remaining girls and it makes the ceremony seems less focus (split attention among 8 girls compared to the usual 4 girls only) and the stage too crowded (too many girls standing in the front row). Top 4 is the perfect format for Miss Earth crowning and we really hope it will return next year.
• The new crown. Following the trends of Miss Universe, Miss Earth also feature a new crown this year. The new crown, said to be adorned with precious stones from over 80 different participating countries, sounds good in concept but seems poor in execution. We dislike the overall design and love the old Swarovski crown better.
So that's it ... our final say of Miss Earth 2009. See you next year at Miss Earth 2010!

Miss World 2009 Part 5 : Third Leaderboard
Our Pantheon this week is heavily influenced by the results of two most prestigious Fast Track events, Beach Beauty and Top Model. Some of our new entrants this week are the girls who rocked both competitions; Scotland, Panama, and Vietnam. Scotland is now the second highest ranked contestant from Europe while Vietnam is the highest ranked contestant from Asia Oceania. Also makes some buzz is Korea, a cute and charming lady, who starts to make strong impression this week.
But the biggest jump of the week comes from the winner of Beach Beauty event, Gibraltar. Her surprising victory over some other more favored contestants has suddenly put a spotlight on this lady, who was virtually negligible by everybody before. She comes out of nowhere to place in Artemis tier this week.
Our Aphrodite for this week is no other than Mexico, who has won this title for three consecutive weeks. Her victory at Top Model event not only ensures Mexico's sixth consecutive placement at Miss World but also proves that her favoritism is not a bluff. Top Model title is also considered a good luck charm, as two previous Miss World winners were also Top Model winners, and with this title in her hand, Mexico has made a strong statement that "she is the one to beat" in the final.
With only one week to go, stay tune for our final Leaderboard next week and find out which girls we think deserve to make the semifinal round of Miss World 2009!
